Guest Spotlight – Leon Bolier

February 9th, 2010

Leon Bolier

Introduction: A major force in second dawn of The Netherlands’ dance music, Leon Bolier is one of the most creative studio minds at work in the country today. Bolier has long since taken the music out of the studio and to the people. Playing hundreds of nights, and in front of hundreds of thousands of clubbers, this mission culminated in Bolier debuting on DJ Magazine’s Top 100 chart in the autumn of 2008.

Going Solo: After a number of highly successful tracks co-produced with his brother Bart under the Subsphere moniker, Leon launched his standalone production career in 2005. Over the course of the next 12 months he released a head-spinning (and possibly record-breaking) 17 tracks. In 2006 he embarked on a label relationship that is now singularly synonymous with his career. ‘Pulsar’ and ‘Solar 1’ were released through the Spinnin’ sub-label 2Play, and over the course of the next 3 years Bolier was to put out an extraordinary 20 tracks through the label.

The Turntablist: After a busy ‘06 on the release front 2007 was the year he entered the DJ realm. Bolier’s innate ability to read the dancefloor and deliver damage-to-order has now become the stuff of legend. Leon fast found himself, headphones-in-hand, rocking countries as far apart as Argentina, Singapore, Mexico, Australia, UK, Egypt and Russia. This 24-month-long gig marathon bore the best possible fruit when Leon was inducted into the spinning elite’s DJ Mag Top 100 DJ rundown in October 2008, debuting at No.95.

Collaborations & Remix Aliases: Aside from Subsphere, Bolier has worked under many different guises for both solo and collaborative production work. He teamed up with Menno de Jong under the name Solar Express in 2006 for the ‘Magma’/Momentum’ and latterly as ‘Bolier and Coenraad for Intuition’s ‘Mighty Ducks’ and ‘Mohawk’. He has also collaborated over the years with fellow Netherlanders including Jonas Steur, Sied van Riel and DJ Astrid and co-op’d with JOOP on ‘The Future’, which became the Trance Energy anthem in 2007.

The Debut Album: With its ‘Ocean Drive Boulevard’-forerunner setting the once-again wide-ranging tone, Bolier’s ‘Pictures’ LP captured the collective imaginations ofclubbers and electronic dance lovers. Upon its release at the end of September 2008, it translated into Beatport smash and has gone on to spawn the further singles ‘Thug’, ‘XD’, ‘YE’ & ‘Acapulco’.

‘Streamlined 2009 – Buenos Aires’: Galvanized by his South American tour in the spring of the same year, he returned home to mix ‘Streamlined 2009’ – his first solo compilation. Subtitled ‘Buenos Aires’, it stands as the clearest possible representation of what makes Bolier one the most exciting, innovative Decktitions in the world today.

Artento Divini

A well known artist once said: “Making and playing music is like a reflex, I just can’t control it”. And a reflex it is for one of Holland’s former talents who is taking the world of dancemusic by storm. Many DJs have made it to the top and so did numerous producers. But there are only so many people who are skilled enough to let both DJ-ing and producing go hand in hand to create a perfect synergy. One of those artists who posesses everything a DJ and producer needs, is Artento Divini.

At the age of 19 the young and enthousiastic Ard Schilderink discovers the world of house music after being a successful cyclist and seeing many parts of Europe. His love for four measured beats starts to grow on him and resulted in buying his very own pair of turntables. Just like every DJ he started practicing the art of mixing, which lead to competing in several mixingcontests and, even more important, conquering these gauntlets. In 2002 Artento headlined the Brazilian festival Eco System and ended up touring this country for over three months and playing small hotspots in a.o. Manaus and other cities bordering the Amazone river.

Trying out different styles of music, slowly his sound developped into the style Divini plays nowadays. In 2006 Artento and his former partner in crime Melvin Warning added a new chapter to his starshooting career by producing the massive clubhit ‘Divini & Warning – 4LB’. Tiësto played it at Sensation White during his 30 minutes surprise-guest-performance, Armin van Buuren started off his set at Dance Valley 2006 playing ‘4LB’ and Sander van Doorn even used this ‘Radio 538 Dance Smash Hit’ on his Dance Valley mix compilation, so the impact of this first release was extremely big. Their second single ‘Chaib’ was dedicated to a special friend who sadly passed away after being involved in a diving accident at the island of Curaçao. Artento Divini: “He lives on in our hearts, also through this record”.

At some point Divini and Warning both decided to pick up their solo careers again and seperated ways. Soon Artento’s first solorelease had reached the cd-wallets of many renowned DJs. ‘Pulse’ was released on 2Play Records and even Eddie Halliwell played this track on his BBC 1 radioshow. But the biggest solo-hit till now was yet to come. ‘Reflex’ has really established Artento Divini’s name within the scene; Sander van Doorn’s DOORN Records picked up this future classic release and made it get stuck at the number two spot of the Beatport-charts for several weeks. Even Australia and New-Zealand will be Reflexed, Central Station has signed this belter exclusively for named territory. ‘Reflex’ has just hit the shelves in cd-single format, so you know where to find it now.

Dutch superstar DJ Jochen Miller and Artento Divini teamed up in the studio for the Emporium anthem 2008, which was signed by Dedicated Records. ‘One Way’ was created for one of Holland’s biggest festivals (Emporium) and the success of this track made them decide to collaborate on more productions. Their bootlegs of a.o. ‘David Guetta – Love Is Gone’ and ‘One Republic – Apologize’ were very well received on the dancefloor and of course brand new material was due soon. The follow up of ‘One Way’ has already reached the playlists of the world’s best DJs, so keep your ears open for the original mix of ‘Many Years’ (Dedicated Records) and the progressive remix that will surely surprise but not disappoint you.

Their Artento Divini vs Jochen Miller project will slightly differ from the Divini & Miller sound; ‘No Backup’ is not as trancy as their other tracks, but once Reset releases this quality production, you will witness the damage it will do throughout the scene. Both ‘Many Years’ and ‘No Backup’ were released in November of 2008.

Artento’s remixes have also become very popular, he has rebuilt tracks like ‘Jochen Miller – Lost Connection” (Marco V started off his set with this one at Sensation White 2008), ‘Fausto – Lupara’ and the near future will show that Divini has got some more remix tricks up his sleeve. Also his bootlegs have become enormously popular, Depeche Mode’s ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘Hide U’ by Kosheen were given the Artento treatment and both go down a storm on the dancefloor. The sound of Artento Divini can be described as a mixture of minimal rhythms, trancy influences and rough driving sounds. Divini: “My creative brain seems unstoppable, it just goes on and on and on. Like someone once said: ‘It’s like a reflex, I just can’t stop it’. So maybe I’ve come down with the same desease as that guy, who knows…”

Catch Artento Divini alongside Jochen Miller on October 31st, at Neuroscience!
